Key Facts About Solar Energy

September 21, 2008 By: blogger Category: Electronics No Comments →

Solar energy consists of the light and heat which is emitted by the sun as electromagnetic radiation.

With today’s technology, we are able to capture this radiation and turn it into usable forms of solar energy - such as heating or electricity.

Although one could go into technical dissertations on the subject of electromagnetic radiation, how it is converted into solar energy, and the exact qualities of its electromagnetic rays, this is not something the average person needs or wants to know.

But in order to be able to benefit from the use of solar energy, there are a few facts you should know. Knowing these facts can assist you to make sound decisions, when looking at the use of solar power as a clean energy source for your home, RV, or whatever the case may be.

Environmental Facts about Solar Energy

All life on earth is dependent upon solar energy. In fact, without solar energy, there would be no life at all. Even the lowest life forms, such as plankton and microbes, need solar energy (in the form of sunlight) in order to survive.

Solar energy is completely environmental friendly, producing absolutely no carbon emissions or other harmful byproducts whatsoever.

Solar energy can be used successfully and cost-effectively just about anywhere on the planet. You do not need to live in a tropical or desert climate in order to benefit from the use of solar energy. Solar power has been used successfully in many cold climates and even in the polar regions.

Every part of the United States receives sufficient sunlight to benefit from and make use of solar energy and solar technology.

The cheapest and most effective method of utilizing solar energy in your home is currently the use of solar water heating systems. In fact, for over one hundred years, solar water heating systems have been commercially available in the United States.

Solar energy can be used for heating homes effectively in cold climates, as well as in warm climates. In fact, for decades now, solar heating has been in use several cold-climate northern European countries.

Solar energy technology has advanced to the point where it can be now be a viable and cost-effective replacement for regular grid-electricity.

Solar energy is rapidly increasing in popularity - so much so that the demand for solar-powered gadgets is currently greater than the supply.

Should You Buy A Cassette Phone Recorder?

September 19, 2008 By: blogger Category: Electronics No Comments →

You probably don’t want to buy a phone recorder that uses cassettes if this is your first recorder and you’re not tied to legacy equipment in your office. If you are tied to what you’ve used before, of course you’ll need to buy something compatible with your current system.

Assuming you’re free to buy whatever you want, you will probably do better with a digital telephone recorder, for several reasons.

First, cassette recorders have very limited storage capacity. The largest capacity tapes will only hold sixty minutes per side, which used to be a lot, but is miniscule compared to digital recording devices that can hold dozens or even hundreds of hours of conversations.

One of the problems with the limited storage on tapes is that if you need to archive them, you have to store the physical tapes. When you record with a digital telephone recorder, all you have to store is small audio files. You can store them on your computer or CD, and catalog them according to whatever system you choose.

Digital files are extremely durable. You can copy them repeatedly with no quality loss, and they don’t degrade with use. With a cassette, you’ll need to keep the master to make copies, and each time it’s played it will lose a small amount of quality.

Digital recorders are also, in general, easier to use. You don’t have to keep tapes around, they require less fussing with, no turning over of tapes or rewinding, and they’re generally less hassle than cassette recorders.

So, to answer the original question, unless you have a very good reason for choosing a cassette telephone recorder over digital, the answer is, no, you probably shouldn’t go with a cassette device. Digital recording devices offer so many advantages that it is hard to justify buying a cassette recorder these days.

Temperature Humidity Chambers. What You Should Look For.

September 19, 2008 By: blogger Category: Electronics No Comments →

Temperature Humidity Chambers are available from a number of manufacturers such as Thermotron, Tenney, Espec, Blue M, Despatch, Ransco, TestEquity, Associated Environmental, Bemco, Cincinnati Sub Zero, BMA, Lunaire etc. When buying a Temperature Humidity Chamber, there are a number of things to consider amongst which are:

(a) of the chamber|The inside dimensions of the temperature humidity chamber|Minimum Internal Dimensions of Chamber[/spin]. This will be determined by the size of the product to be tested.

(b)Temperature Range required for the test you intend performing. The maximum range of a Temperature Humidity Chamber is usually from -73C to +200C. However, to achieve this complete range the chamber will need to have two compressors in what is referred to as a cascade refrigeration system. If only one compressor is used, then temperatures down to approximately -35C is possible. Keep in mind that humidity testing can not be performed below 0C (freezing point) and that any testing below 0C will be possible for temperature only testing (humidity function will be disabled). Temperature Humidity Chambers are also available without any refrigeration at all. The lowest temperatures at which testing can be done without refrigeration is usually about 12C above room temperature.

(c) Humidity Range required for the test you intend performing. Although most Temperature Humidity Chambers claim that they have a humidity range of 20% to 95%, what is often overlooked is the temperature range at which these humidity levels can be controlled. For example, at 25C, the lowest humidity obtainable by most chambers with refrigeration will be about 45% (unless a dehumidifier package is installed). As one increases the temperature above 25C, lower humidity levels than 45% can be controlled. Normally graphs are provided by the manufacturer indicating the temperature versus humidity range of the temperature humidity chamber.

(d) Water Recycling System - If you do not have a drain available to drain the excess water used to create the humidity, one should consider a water recycling system consisting of a water storage container, demineralizer cartridge and recycling pump. This will recycle the water and a drain will not be required. Important - demineralized water should be used for Temperature Humidity Chambers, not deionized water which can harm the interior of the chamber (usually stainless steel) and other components!

More Advanced Features With Blu Ray Disc Player

September 16, 2008 By: blogger Category: Electronics No Comments →

The headlines read: “Sony Says Blu Ray will Conquer Half the Market By 2008.” Until now, you may have never have heard of the blu ray disc before. One thing is for sure. Sony’s Blu Ray has impressed the likes of Warner Brothers, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount and Disney studios enough to produce all upcoming high-definition releases in the new format.

The good news is that you didn’t get suckered into buying a HD DVD player that is now obsolete. Here you will learn all of the basics about this new technology so that you can make up your mind as to whether it’s a trend or a necessity for your household.

blu ray
Blu Ray (BR) is the new format developed for optimal recording, rewriting, playing and storing of high-definition video. The world first learned about the new technology with the release of Sony’s PlayStation3 in November 2006. To make more advanced games, Sony needed a way to “fit in” more data.

While the DVDs in your current collection hold 9 GB of information, the Blu Ray discs are able to hold 25-50 GB, making it five times more efficient! Manufacturers like Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp and JVC (to name a few) are using a different type of laser (blue versus the traditional red) to pack more data with better precision.

blu ray discs
Several days after the November 2006 release of PS3, Sony offered its first stand alone Blu Ray disc player for $300. Thanks to the new technology, the PlayStation was surpassing its rival, the Xbox360, by selling 13 million units. Imagine purchasing a new DVD and then downloading exciting, updated bonus material onto the rewritable storage section of the disc.

Since November, all the blu ray discs featuring 1.1-2.0 technology and are BD-Live enabled, meaning that you can link up to the internet to download movie trailers onto the rewritable portion of your Blu Ray disc and play interactive games, as well as receive firmware updates and exclusive downloads of additional bonus material.

blu ray hd dvd
So just how popular is the Blu Ray? It’s so popular that market analysts are speculating that Sony may not have the capacity to tackle the demand for the new bluray disc ! The demand is said to be around 43 million units worldwide, but factories can only handle production for 38 million, and that’s after an upgrade to their facilities.

Therefore, you can expect prices to remain high until the supply side catches up with the demand. Prices on the initial players range from $400 to $1,000 but the subsequent versions are expected to be offered for around $300.

Advice On Buying A Used Cell Phone

September 14, 2008 By: blogger Category: Electronics No Comments →

If you hope to own a cell phone but your budget won’t permit you to do so, you can always opt to buy cheap used cell phones. The point to mull over here is: where can you get one? It’s quite fulfilling to know that you can get high quality pre owned cell phones both from local second hand stores or over the internet.

The primary appeal of buying second hand or previously owned phones is that it’s economical. Anticipate used cell phones to be cheaper by almost 50 percent compared to a new one.

Bear in mind that small decisions can spell a whole world of difference in our daily lives. The simple act of buying something as day-to-day as used cell phones can make for a big impact on our surroundings.

As you may already know, tons of cellular phones end up in landfills annually. Choosing to buy a pre-owned unit implies making a small yet important contribution in saving the earth’s landfills from being filled with too much rubbish.

Another aspect why you should simply choose a used cell phone rather than new one is that you will save yourself the trouble of getting mugged because a pre owned phone is not a hot item in the eyes of muggers.

There are a lot of rationales why you should not turn down a second-hand phone. Despite the reality that the world of technology is changing every second, this is not an excuse to give used cell phones a condescending stare.

Any used 3G iPhone you find on the market can still perform efficiently. The important thing is that the units are still able to provide you the functions you need in a mobile phone without costing an arm and a leg.

Sellers of used cell phones are normally found in online stores like ebay. As a reminder it is best to inspect the item thoroughly. Ask the seller if she can provide pictures or video of the phone so you can inspect the unit well.

Piano Lamp - Improve Your Piano Playing

September 13, 2008 By: blogger Category: Electronics No Comments →

Way back in the days of old people would play the piano at night by candlelight. That practice made it difficult to read the music and sometimes could even be dangerous. The glare that reflected off the music and into the eyes of the player many times gave people eyestrain. One day a lamp specialist attempted to solve the problem by placing a cover on the back of the candle so the light would not reflect back into the player’s eyes. That was the beginning of the piano lamp.

It was not long after that event that electricity and the light bulb were developed. While far safer than a candle, the light bulb created a glare that was worse than before when using a candle. The same idea to place a cover on the light came about and the cover was positioned on the bulb to reflect the light onto the music and not into the eyes of the person playing it.

A candleabra is a very fancy lamp. A candleabra typically has multiple lights and is most recognized when sitting atop a grand piano. Most candleabras are expensive and have prices that range from $200 to $1000. While certainly attractive, the candleabra is still a piano lamp and has a purpose in lighting music while not creating glare for the musician. Each piano type has a style of piano lamp to go along with it whether the piano is a console, studio, grand or upright. There are piano lamps that are completely adjustable from the floor that will serve the need for all types of pianos.

Many models of piano lamps are vertical and raise directly from their base on the floor. The advantage a floor based piano lamp has is that it can display light in about any angle imagined. A common characteristic among piano lamps is that they all are covered to reduce the glare and reflect light onto th eplaying surface of the piano. Piano Lamps are beautiful and are often used to showcase the pianos of musicians. The functional lamps can accentuate the beauty of any music room.

Many materials and many different styles tell the story about the design of piano lamps. Chrome and brass are the most widely used raw material used in the manufacturing process of piano lamps but different materials are becoming available to allow for less expensive lamps that wll allow more people to purchase them.

The shelf style (sits on top of the piano) piano light is usually height adjustable, and many feature a weighted base to allow for increased stability. Many times the base is made of a high quality material such as marble, to add beauty to the lamp as well as a great weight which serves the function. A very practical feature of a piano lamp is a counter-weighted arm, which most piano lamps have, preventing the lamp from getting top heavy regardless of its positional setting.

Piano lamps are manufactured to be either plug-in or battery-powered. Several companies also manufacture piano lamps that clip-on directly to the sheet music. An electric piano lamp is normally designed for either one or two light bulbs of 40-watts or less. You can purchase these piano lamps at furnishing stores, music stores or online. The price in US dollars of a piano lamp can range from as low as forty to as high as hundreds of dollars.

Piano lamps provide elegant light and can set a great mood for a piano recital or concert. The safe and modern piano lamp can be even more stunning in its appearance then the most wonderful candleabras of times gone by.
