Experience the world in Newport Oregon with Culture Shock
Opening the festival on Saturday with a drumming ceremony will be the Ashay Rhythm Troupe. Returning will be festival favorites Shannon Rackowski and the music and dance of Hawaii; Chayag, featuring Alex Llumiquinga with music of the Andes; and The Nettles, with their Celtic Music.
Shannon Rackowski not only brings smiles and Hawaiian music and dance to the Silverman Stage, but also passes on some of the traditional dances to the audience. Audience members are invited to watch a moving performance, and then try the moves themselves.
Alex Llumiquinga brings with him traditional instruments from Ecuador, including the haunting pan pipes.
Other activities during the day include a Festival Bazaar with art, artifacts, and food including Chinese, Mexican, and desserts from around the world.
Internationally certified Natural Henna Artists Lynn and Laura Getner will be setting up shop for Baraka Body Art: Temporary Tattoos with Henna as part of the festival. Advanced appointments for Saturday, Sept. 30.
Festival sponsors include Mo’s Enterprises, Rogue Ale, Peter Heisler, Aquarium Village, and Jambo World Crafts, Hallmark Resort, Scanners, Park Motel, Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, and the City of Newport.
